Should you choose medication to help you through your anxiety or depression?

It is normal to get anxious and have low cycles in life, but if those nerves or sad feelings interfere with your quality of life, it might be time to seek help. There are many different types of therapies and treatments that can be beneficial in managing your mental health.

Some people might benefit from medication, while others might prefer talk therapy or holistic treatments to improve their mental health. Some people may even benefit from medication alongside anxiety and depression therapy. It is important to find what works best for you and to stick with it. There is no shame in seeking help because it can change the trajectory of your life and bring you down a path of wellness.

If your therapist or mental health clinician has suggested antidepressants and/or if you are considering getting on anxiety medication or depression medication, here are a few things you might want to know!

Antidepressants

There are several different theories and approaches that therapists may use to treat patients with anxiety or depression. One method for treating anxiety and depression is by using medical science or the use of medication.

There are many different types of antidepressants, but they all work in a similar way. Antidepressants increase the amount of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that helps regulate mood. Antidepressants also work to stabilize the electrical activity in the brain. This can help improve symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Antidepressants come in the form of anti depression pills, liquids, or injections that you take once or twice a day.

What are the benefits of adding medication to your therapy?

Antidepressants and anxiety medication can help balance the neurotransmitters in your brain that affect your mood and emotions. Because of this, medication can be very beneficial. Benefits include:

  • Improved mood
  • Reduced biological impact of stress on the brain
  • Reduced neuroinflammation
  • Improved sleep
  • Increased concentration
  • Improved appetite
  • Balance stress levels, etc.

What are some of the negative effects of adding medication to your therapy to manage your symptoms of anxiety and depression?

While antidepressants are effective for many people, they are not the right solution for everyone. Some people experience unpleasant side effects when taking antidepressants, such as nausea, weight gain, or difficulty sleeping. Additionally, some people do not find that antidepressants relieve their symptoms adequately. If you are considering taking antidepressants, it is important to speak with your therapist or mental health clinician to determine if they are the right treatment for you.
